Lower limb total joint arthroplasty (TJA) is usually offered to patients to alleviate symptoms of their hip or knee osteoarthritis when conservative management fails. In other orthopaedic conditions, second opinions have been found to result in up to half of the patients initially recommended for surgery having their treatment plan reversed. We present a prospective study conducted between November 2018 and February 2024 at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (RPAH), Sydney. Patients booked for TJA at seven hospitals across New South Wales were referred to RPAH for waitlist reduction. These patients received a surgical second opinion regarding their appropriateness to undergo their previously booked surgery.
